Listened to Tokyo Kosei Wind Orchestra the 162nd Subscription Concert at Nakano Zero Hall, Tokyo.
The concert theme featured two of the world’s major cities: New York and Edo, the former name of Tokyo. All the musical pieces carried significant weight, yet the TKWO performers skillfully conveyed the unique character of each composition.
In John Mackey’s Asphalt Cocktail, the percussion was impressively powerful without being too noisy. The great skill of professional percussionists made it possible. Jan van der Roost always keeps his unique colour even when the piece describes Manhattan, which was interesting.
The excellent artistry of TKWO musicians in East Coast Pictures by Nigel Hess and the vivid sense of colours in Symphony No.2 — View of Edo by Franco Cesarini were delightful as well.
