Listened to the Tokyo College of Music Band Academy‘s Spring-Semester-End Concert.
The repertoire was literary academic; ranging from Renaissance and Bach to band classics such as RVW as well as this year’s AJBC set piece Retro. Notably, they also incorporated flexible-ensemble scores as well, which shows their horizons toward recent school-band circumstances.
The ensemble skills of this band are always amazing! I feel that this band can be said a model of how to use your ears in the ensemble.
A set piece Retro was already pretty familiar to me. Maestro Tatsuya Shimono’s interpretation was so fresh and impressive. Furthermore, to my delight, the performance was, unexpectedly even for the performers themselves, conducted by Mr Masamicz Amano himself, the composer! I enjoyed it more than enough.
