Attended the subscription concert of the Tokyo Kosei Wind Orchestra at Tokyo Opera City.
The concert’s theme was “Spanish Band Music.” People’s familiarity with it seems to vary quite a bit. Personally, I’ve been relatively fortunate to have had several opportunities to encounter it—such as attending the WASBE 2019 conference in Spain and interviewing Luis Alarcón for Band Journal.
It was quite significant that TKWO performed these works—originally written for large-scale community bands of more than 80 players, which are common in Spain—using a wind ensemble formation
In fact, Alarcón said in our Band Journal interview, “My ideal band is something like a wind ensemble of refined players.” Thanks to TKWO’s performance, we were able to fully appreciate the appeal of these works, including aspects that are difficult to express with the typical instrumentation found in Spain.
Another great thing was that the concert was held at Tokyo Opera City! I imagine the acoustic capacity at Nakano Zero might not have been sufficient for today’s repertoire.
I noticed many microphones set up on stage. Hopefully, this performance will be released as a recording It could make a significant impact not only in Japan but across the global wind band community—especially in Europe!
